The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel Citizen and Secretary of Florence
The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel Citizen and Secretary of Florence Written Originally in Italian and from thence, Newly and Faithfully Translated into English.
Folio (13″tall) full blind-stamped calf leather. First Printing, 1675. Rebacked with matching recent leather and with the inner hinges reinforced. Lacking some of the original endpapers. Some rather clumsy paper patch repairs to mostly margins of pp. 130-250 with some minor text loss to the top outside of 3 pp. in that section and some rippling of those pages, otherwise Good to Very Good with moderate edgewear, scuffing, scratches and lightly bumped corners with moderate exposure of boards at lower outside corner of front cover.
Note: The letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius (actually written by Henry Neville) in this volume is the first appearance in this the first English printing of the works. The letter as Neville had written it, contained statements potentially treasonous and so was left out of the text by the publisher. There is a space left blank in the text block by the printer.
Buyers at the bookshop of the publisher, John Starkey, were supplied with a copy of the offending text and encouraged to insert it into the text. This copy of the works has the first and part of the second sentence of the treasonous text hand written in ink in the space provided in the text block which would have made it a dangerous volume to possess.
